Munich is a major European cultural centre and is home to some of the world’s most important opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera which staged many premiers, one of them being “Tristan and Isolde” by Richard Wagner. Englischer Garten, covering an area of 3.75 km2, is one of the world's largest urban public parks.
The city’s zoo Tierpark Hellabrunn was the first international Geozoo where the animals were displayed in zoogeographic regions. It hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics (overshadowed by the so-called Munich massacre).

Since then monasteries have always played an important role in the city’s history, especially as the monks introduced the tradition of brewing. Each year the love for beer is celebrated at the renowned Munich Oktoberfest.
